Treating Stress Urinary Incontinence with Femtouch
Millions of women deal with a range of issues related to menopause, postpartum, and pregnancy. Our bodies can suffer from each of these typical life stages, especially the vaginal area. One of the most prevalent conditions affecting women is stress-related urine incontinence, or "SUI."
Stress Urinary Incontinence: What Is It?
SUI is defined by the Mayo Clinic as inadvertent urine loss that usually occurs during physical activity or movement, such as coughing, sneezing, running, or heavy lifting. These actions exert strain on your bladder, increasing the risk of a leak. The number of adult women in the US who experience stress urine incontinence is estimated to be 15 million. This corresponds to approximately 24% of women in the 18–44 age range and 23% of women in the 60+ age range. Many people with stress urine incontinence find their quality of life significantly impacted by the extreme embarrassment that comes with the condition. SUI can restrict leisure and physical activities, and it can also lead to social distancing in certain women.
Why Does SUI Occur?
Pregnancy and childbirth are the primary causes of SUI, although there are additional conditions that can also play a role, such as:
- loss of pelvic muscle tone
- hysterectomy
- nerve and muscle damage from birthing or surgical trauma
- obesity
- menopause
- chronic coughing due to smoking and lung disease
- anatomical predisposition
- repeated heavy lifting or high impact sports
Is SUI Present in Me?
Regrettably, most women who experience stress urine incontinence frequently neglect to adequately treat it. According to a poll conducted by the National Association for Incontinence, it takes women an average of 6.5 years from the time they first notice symptoms to get a correct diagnosis and start therapy. Urine leaking that is not wanted, whether it be a few drops or a tablespoon or more, is the main sign of stress urinary incontinence. Patients with mild SUI often leak when engaging in vigorous physical activity, whereas those with moderate to severe SUI leak when performing daily tasks like standing or walking.
